Magic Forest - Gamedesign

Magic Forest

Für den Kurs GameDesign im WS2020/21 haben wir ein paar Illustrationen zu einem Spiel erstellt das wir uns ausdenken sollten. Hier sind einige meiner Arbeiten, alles ist in Englisch gehalten.

Logline

Magic Forest is a point and click adventure full of color and magic.

You are a druid, living for generations in this special forest, protecting it from all danger and harm, by collecting ressources for your magicals potions.

One day a harmfull curse infected the forests life-crystal. Your powers are getting weaker and slowly the forest is about to die.

Use all your power and skill to restore the full health of your home and yourself again.

Deiland

In Deiland you need to protect your own little planet. This planet is powered by a crytal in the center of it. To complete the quests your need to plant, harvest and/or collect ressources and craft other things like potions out of it. Those two things helped me with my idea for my game. Deiland is a very relaxing and quiet game, it is easy to play and a simple Design makes it easy to understand the mechanics. Sadly sometimes the quests are not specific enough and you get stuck.

The Whispered World

The Whispered World is a point-and-click adventure game that takes place in a fantasy world and features a melancholy twelve-year-old clown as its hero. The graphics are 2D and are all hand-drawn and animated.
The Inventory is a old leatherbag, what inspired me to use the same kind of bag. The interaction with the character is very easy and the conversations are super funny, what I loved! You have a little companion that is also usable, what makes the game even more loveable.

Kingdom New Lands

In this game you play a king or a Queen on a horse that needs to build up their kingdom in the forest. In this sidescroller you need to recruit people in the forest, build walls and huts to protect the village and fight against the evil. Everything you need is a little purse full of gold. The enviroment is very dark and almost creepy. If it gets night and dark the evil comes out and attacks your village from both sides. Sometimes you cant run fast enough from one side to the other and you loose one. The evil in this game are purple and grey creatures that have diffrent attack abilities. Those are the rolemodels for my curse.

Unforeseen Incidents

This specific game inspired me because its a Point and Click game like mine. It has very muted colores and plays in a serious enviroment. You play as a lazy man that needs to find out what is happening in his city. If you collect diffrent items you can solve puzzles and continue in the game. The puzzles arent to hard but you still need to think a bit and find out in which screen you need to use what item. Carfull listening to the characters is very important!

Diffrent assets like Trees, stumps, bushes and so on got drawn in healed stadium and then transformed to infected.

With those collectables you can brew potions.
Those potions are nessesary for the games progress.

For the staff of the druid, I wanted to go with a very nature-based and carved wooden „stick“. I love round and soft plants so I surrounded the staff with a green liana and added some leaves on top to make it look bigger. The „cage“ I build on the tip of the Staff is meant to be the magic-cage. Here all the magic comes together to use it.

User Interface

I got my inspiration for the magic-bar from the Game Ori and the blind forest and for the inventory I went for a basic leather look-a-like bag inspired by The Whispered World.

With the circles you can see how much magic-powers you already restored.

The first levels are about collecting and crafting potions, healing the enviroment to slowly get back your power.

The screen below shows the end of the game. Here you find the life-crystal of the magical forest. Now you need to heal it from the curse, but you can only do that, when you completely restored your magical powers, visible on the lower left corner with the green dots.

The first screen shows the unhealed stadium and the last one how it is in his full power.

Fonts and Colors

I focused on very earthy and natural colors for the base game and added a brighter purple for the curse to make it more „out of the world“.
